Woking lose 3 – 4 to Guildford & Godalming in first round of Longman Cup
In spite of heavy rain overnight the Pine Road lawns were just fit for play but dried very quickly considering how much rain had fallen in the preceding week. Our opponents had sent a very experienced team with handicaps of eight and lower.
Although Colin Groves disposed of G&Gs number 2 fairly comfortably Mike Newman struggled to make an impact on their number 4 and, with our doubles pairing of Steve Twilley and Peter Velati losing, Woking were 1 – 2 down at lunch, so needing to win three of the four singles in the afternoon.
In the afternoon Colin again won his match easily. Two games went to time. In the first Mike had a hard struggle against Robert, prevailing by just three points and in the other Steve staged a spirited recovery but when time was up found himself four points short of the score that would have given Woking victory, Peter having lost earlier.
