Amazing International Tournament Experience for Woking Juniors!

Main Image

Following some fantastic qualifying tournament wins earlier in the Summer, Woking juniors Genna Vine and Konstantin Vujnovic were took the opportunity to compete for Team GB in this years Champions Bowl tournament in Croatia. They both had a fantastic time and Genna kindly shared her story…..

“The Champions Bowl tournament 2019, hosted by the Umag Tennis Academy in Umag, Croatia, was such an amazing experience for me. After winning my first 16U tournament, I did not realise that it would lead to such a life changing opportunity.

There were 30 countries competing to win the Champions Bowl trophy at this tournament. The Great British team all arrived in Croatia knowing no one but as the days went by we grew into a family, watching and supporting each and everyone’s matches. The atmosphere throughout the team was electric. Throughout the week, I got to know people in my team as well as people from other countries. Through this trip, I made friendships that’ll last forever.

The tournament itself was a new experience for me. We played all our matches on real clay courts which is very different to the artificial clay we have in Britain. Each age group had a round robin and consolation stage, to guarantee everyone at least three matches before taking the top two from each box for the main draw. There was also a doubles tournament that ran which helped to bring team mates closer together. The tournament ran very smoothly and was extremely well organised.

In the singles event, I came second in my group which got me through to the semis finals. I came third overall in my age group. I also played doubles with my GB team mate, but lost in the first round to Spain who went on to win.

I loved the different activities that were held throughout each day with prizes for the winners, especially the new racket sport ‘Teqis’, played on a curved table tennis style table that is trying to come on to the sporting circuit.

On day 5, there was an adults tie-break 10’s tournament and the whole GB team was there to support a dad from the GB team. With such huge support, the GB dad won the tournament, which shows how close and supportive our team grew in such a short space of time.

I would recommend the opportunity to play in this event anyone…. It was the best week of my life and I would go back in a click of a finger!”.

Lookout for qualifying tournaments again next Summer.
