With Rafa Nadal having just yet another French Open and Wimbledon fever on the horizon, Sarah Williams (Active Surrey Schools Manager) and Jonny Thomson (Woking LTCC Tennis Programme Manager) thought it might be a good idea to expand the popular annual Woking Primary schools competition to also invite children that hadn’t had much experience of tennis before to take part in a Tennis skills competition to encourage more fun physical activity among Primary schools pupils in the local area. The idea was pretty popular to say the least and the “Woking Tennis Festival” was born!
On the 11th June 128 local children from 12 local Primary schools in year 3-6 got to experience the delightful surroundings of Woking’s finest Tennis Club in this exciting new event. Run by the team of 8 Woking LTCC Professional Coaches and 16 enthusiastic assistants from year 10 at local Hoe Valley School, children in year 3-4 were taken round a series of Tennis Challenge’s including “Ace Sever”, “Explosion Relay” and “Goal keeper tennis”. Pupils were awarded for their “Schools Games Values” of; Teamwork, Self-Belief, Honesty, Passion, Respect and Determination, with the team from Greenfield coming out as champions to qualify for the Surrey County Finals in July.
Whilst the younger years got to enjoy the challenges, children from year 5-6 got a bit more serious and competed in the traditional Orange ball junior doubles competition. After some fantastic on court battles and monster rallies, the team from Goldsworth eventually came out on top, with Pirbright coming runners up.
Following the Festival, the Woking Coaching team are now offering a series of “Tennis For kids” taster courses at the Club and Woking Park where kids aged 4-10yrs can get six 1hr lessons, a racket, set of balls and tennis shirt for only £30. All local children who fancy giving tennis a try are welcome to take part!
