Aegon Men's A Team Report (Mike Paling)
The Squad: Alex Miotto, Marcus Solarz-Hendriks, Jamie Donaghy, Patrick Ogier, Matt Leahy, Stephen Gibbons, James Eager, Marcus Thompson and Michael Paling.
Firstly, I would like to thank Andrew Kirby and Matt Trevail for their tremendous support throughout the 2017 season. The team as a whole would also like to thank all of the members who came down to support their home matches and cheer them on to some fantastic victories. Finally, I would like to thank every team member who put their heart and soul into every single match and represented Woking Lawn Tennis Club in a fantastic manner.
Woking managed to finish 2nd in the Surrey 1 league which is the highest the club has achieved in recent years. It was a bitter sweet season however as the aim of getting promoted was not achieved. This honour went to Virgin Active Croydon, a premier league team who were docked 2 divisions for being unable to field a team last season. Although the Woking team came very close to beating them, the four full-time world ranked players fielded by the Croydon team were slightly too strong for Woking this year.
It has been a fantastic season overall however, with the team winning against every other club including Westside, Roehampton and Purley. I truly believe that next year will be the year where Woking are able to win the surrey division and venture forth into the Regional division and face the likes of Queens and the All England Club.
Match of the year - Woking Defeated Westside 1st team 10-2 at home.
This is certainly the stand out result for the team, having never defeated Westside 1st team before, the boys managed to produce some fantastic tennis which lead to a resounding victory. Alex Miotto, Stephen Gibbons and Matt Leahy produced some fantastic singles results all winning their matches. Marcus Solarz-Hendriks and Stephen Gibbons managed to defeat their first team doubles pair in a 3rd set thriller. Alex Miotto and Matt Leahy dispatched of their 2nd pair in a hugely impressive doubles display.
Player of the year - Stephen Gibbons
There are a number of contenders for this prestigious award; however the standout performance came from Stephen Gibbons. Stephen has improved tremendously from last year and remained undefeated in every singles match he played. This included a fantastic win against the best player from Roehampton where Stephen held is nerve in a 3 set thriller. Although he is a singles specialist, he transitioned fantastically into the doubles matches and picked up a hugely impressive win against the Westside 1st pair.
