Match Report - Woking Men’s 1st Team defeat Roehampton 6-0!!
Thanks to all of those who came down to watch the matches yesterday, I hope you enjoyed the fantastic tennis, some goodies from the Club bar and the amazing weather. It was a great event, with the largest ever home crowd in attendance, cheering our boys on…
Woking recorded their first ever 6-0 win in Surrey Division 1 against an extremely tough Roehampton side. The Roehampton team had been winning each match in the lower divisions without losing a single rubber, however, the mighty Woking proved too much for them to handle.
This emphatic win keeps the promotion dream into the Regional division very much alive.
1. Paddy Ogier (Woking) wins 6-0, 6-1
Paddy was simply far too consistent for the Roehampton No.1; an impressive display of grinding down his opponent by moving him side to side before unleashing a devastating forehand winner proved too much for his opposite number to deal with. Paddy barely broke into top gear, ultimately cruising to an easy victory.
2. Alex Miotto (Woking) wins 6-2, 6-3
Alex certainly faced a stern test against a regular starter for the Roehampton team, who was capable of unleashing some fierce winners. However, the opponent had no response to Alex’s serve firing down at over 140mph. The pressure of holding became too much for Alex’s opponent, leading to him being broken multiple times throughout the match.
3. Stephen Gibbons (Woking) wins 6-3, 3-6, 10-8
Stephen was involved in the match of the day against one of the strongest players Roehampton had to offer. After smashing his way to a set and a break up, things appeared to be going very well. However, the Roehampton player rallied with some big hitting to take the second set. In a fantastic show of mental resilience, Stephen quickly re-discovered his passing shots, sufficient to close out the match in a very exciting 10-8 tiebreak.
4. Jamie Donaghy (Woking) wins 6-0, 6-1
Jamie faced the most seasoned of the Roehampton players, who had a huge amount of tricks up his sleeves. However, Jamie fought fire with fire, unleashing lethal drop shot-lob combinations sending his opponent all over the court. Jamie used his trademark volleys to blow his opponent away in a rather short encounter.
5. Alex Miotto and Jamie Donaghy win 6-4, 6-4
With the Roehampton 1st pair having to pull out of the doubles, due to an injury sustained in the singles match, just one match remained to give Woking the opportunity of their first ever 6-0 win. Alex and Jamie proved a fantastic team, with Alex using his power to set up the points, before Jamie finished them off emphatically at the net. Both players held serve throughout the match, resulting in a resounding straight sets victory.
Let’s try and beat the attendance record for our next home fixture!
