The Woking Open celebrated its 88th year, and took place between 26th July and 1st August 2015 at Woking Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club. Our new sponsors, Vines of Guildford BMW, provided great prizes for winners and runners-up along with an official courtesy car transporting players ‘Wimbledon style’ to and from Woking Station. HEAD also provided some excellent winners’ prizes and the balls for the event.
The Tournament was well attended this year with a record entry in the Men’s and Ladies Open Events. Many of the Club’s coaches played in the Open Events including Mark Wisdom and Jamie Donaghy, who knocked out the No. 1 seeds in the quarter-finals of the Men’s Doubles but lost in an entertaining final to Paul Johnson and Cameron Alexander from Kingsley Tennis Club, Bordon. Another Woking tennis coach, Anna Opalach played very well, but lost in the Ladies Open semi-final to the eventual winner, Natalie Hepburn from Plymouth. The Men’s Singles was won by Surrey’s top 18 year old, Lamar Bartley who outclassed the field to win without dropping a set.
It was runners-up all round for the local players, with Woking’s Caitlin Pye coming runner-up in the mixed 8U’s (despite being the only girl in the event), Zach Waugh / Mohamed Mahani reaching the final of the 12U Doubles, as well as Emma Stewart and Daisy Phillips of Elstead finishing runners-up in respective 12U and 16U events.
This major event in the Surrey tennis calendar has again been a great success, enjoyed by the players and spectators alike, with great weather throughout the week.
