JUNIOR CHESS SECTION NEWSLETTER : AUTUMN 2010
Overview
The junior section meets for an hour during school term times at 6.45pm on
Thursdays - just before the senior club starts. The autumn term saw twelve
attendees - both boys and girls - aged from 6 to 17.
The atmosphere during sessions is relaxed. I normally do a bit of teaching
on an individual basis, though occasionally I bring out the chess demonstration
board. For the last few weeks, Vladimir Bovtramovics - an excellent senior
player - has been doing some work on endgame checkmates with the older juniors,
while I've been doing similar things with the younger ones, as well as bringing
them up to scratch. I awarded Adit, Marcus, Dominic, Advait, Nayat and Henry
a "pawn certificate", indicating a knowledge of all the rules of
playing a game of chess, up to and including en passant.
CCF Champions League First Leg (team-of-4 event) (November
2010)
Woking Juniors fielded a young team (oldest aged 8): Nayat, Advait, Henry
and Adit. This was the first time any of them had appeared in such a competition,
and I was pleased that individuals managed to win some of their games.
CCF Chess Challenge 2010 (Spring/Summer 2010)
This is a fairly local event (mostly Surrey/Kent competitors). The first leg
took place at the club during the spring term, with members playing each other.
The winners of each section were then invited to take part in the second leg
event at Coulsdon in June, which saw about 100 competitors. Not all those
invited from Woking were able to attend. In the Under 15 section, Lewis came
fourth out of eight players and Robin came eighth.
British
Land UK Chess Challenge (Spring/Summer 2008)
This is an annual national junior chess competition that takes place in several
stages, allowing the most inexperienced players to compete in the early stages,
yet testing the mettle of the finest at the end." Children from over
2000 schools typically take part. Ben was awarded a rosette along with his
certificate for winning a high proportion of his games. (See photo.)
Woking
Junior Section v Prins Willem-Alexander School Friendly Match (2007)
This event was fun; the teams were evenly matched and the result was a 3-3 draw. (See photo).
